License to Carry:
- Complete Training: Take a 4–6 hour course (online or in-person) covering Texas laws, firearm safety, non-violent dispute resolution, and storage, plus a shooting proficiency test (1-2 hours at a range like 407 Gun Club). TPD’s course is at https://trainprotectdefend.com/courses/texas-online-license-to-carry. Proficiency can be done before online completion.
- Submit Application: Apply online at the Texas DPS website (https://txapps.texas.gov/txapp/txdps/ltc/), pay the $40 fee, and provide personal details (e.g., ID, residency history). Non-residents need valid ID or proof of intent to establish Texas residency.
- Fingerprinting: Schedule an appointment with Identogo (fee ~$10) after applying, using the code from DPS.
- Submit Documents: Upload the LTC-104 certificate from your training to DPS.
- Wait for Approval: DPS processes applications in 2–8 weeks (up to 60 days, or 180 days if additional info needed). The LTC is valid for 4 years (5 for renewals).
TPD offers two formats for Texas LTC training, both meeting DPS standards
- Online LTC Course (most popular): 4 hours online covering Texas laws, firearm safety, and non-violent dispute resolution, plus a 1-2 hour in-person shooting proficiency at 407 Gun Club. Proficiency can be completed before the online portion. Enroll at https://trainprotectdefend.com/courses/texas-online-license-to-carry.
- In-Person LTC Course: 4–6 hours of classroom training at 407 Gun Club, followed by a 1-2 hour range proficiency test. Ideal for hands-on learners. Schedule via https://trainprotectdefend.com/courses/texas-online-license-to-carry.
Both include a written exam and issue an LTC-104
Security Officer Training:
Texas security officer licenses (Level II, III, IV) are regulated by the DPS Private Security Bureau.
- Level II (Non-Commissioned): Complete a online course on security basics, apply via the TOPS portal and submit the certificate via the TOPS portal, and pay fees. No firearms training required.
- Level III (Commissioned): Requires Level II completion. Complete a blended course (online + 10-hour in-person, including self defense tachtics and firearms training) at 407 Gun Club, apply via the TOPS portal, and pass a background check and MMPI evaluation and pay application fees.
- Level IV (PPO): Complete a 15-hour in-person classroom course (no range) covering executive protection and Texas laws at 407 Gun Club, apply via the TOPS portal, and pass a background check, and pay application fees.
