Private Security Officer Level III In-Person Course Information

Tasks to complete prior to session:

Course location, start time, and lunch:

  • For the initial 10-hour course: Class starts promptly at 8a, Door locks at 8a! (range waiver will be completed after range opens. Call 940-222-8534 if you will not be attending before 8a.
  • For the 5-hour re-certification course: Class starts promptly at 1p (please arrive early to do the range waiver). Call 940-222-8534 if you will not be attending before 1p.
  • Watch the video below for detailed instructions of what to do when you arrive. 407 Gun Club will be closed when you arrive, the instructor will meet you in the parking lot at least 20 minutes prior to class and show you where to park. Please stay in your vehicle.
  • Lunch will not be provided. There is a BBQ restaurant within walking distance of the training facility. You may bring food in a cooler. There is a microwave available to warm up food.

General information:

  • This is the 10-hour (10-hours for initial level III students, re-certification students is 5-hours) hands on defensive tactic and firearms training with live fire qualification for Level 3 Security Officers in Texas.
  • You must have completed the required classroom training for Level 3 Officers prior to this in person class. If you have not you can take the online course by clicking here.
  • You must bring your own handgun.

  • Students must be proficient in the firearms they will be qualifying in, as Instructors can not assist the student during the proficiency test. If you are inexperienced using a handgun please take our Defend Ready Basic Pistol course prior to this class! Click Here to Register
  • The proficiency qualification is for pistol only due to range rules. Our shotgun qualification is done at a different range on another day. Your instructor will provide information about shotgun qualifications during the class.

Equipment Requirements

  • Handgun:
    • Must bring your own handgun. You cannot rent a handgun for this course, no exceptions.
    • Should be in clean and safe working order.
    • Magazines: at least TWO (empty) required for semi-autos.
    • Optics: Red or green dot optics permitted (as of 2023). No magnification or lasers allowed.
    • Ammunition: Minimum of 50 rounds FMJ or JHP brass-cased ammunition compatible with your firearm. Minimum caliber for Level 3 Security License Qualification with a semi-automatic is 9mm. Minimum for a revolver is .38 caliber. All ammo must be in good condition, brass-cased, factory ammo, no reloads, no steel. Ammo is available for purchase at 407 Gun Club.
    • Hearing Protection (plugs or muffs)
    • Eye protection: Standard safety glasses or regular prescription glaases.
  • Safety Gear: Hearing and eye protection (loaners available at no cost).
  • Footwear: that covers the entire foot (mandatory)
  • Pants: suitable for training, with a standard belt. Duty belt is not needed.
  • Shirt: with a conservative neckline (suggested, to protect against hot brass)

Personal firearms must be unloaded in a case, or bag at all times except when on the firing line and under the direction of the instructor. Carrying a firearm on your person is not allowed.

All individuals qualifying with a firearm to satisfy the requirements shall qualify with an actual demonstration by the individual of the ability to safely and proficiently use the category of firearm for which the individual seeks qualification.

The categories of handguns are:

  • SA–Semi-automatic; and
  • NSA–Non semi-automatic.
  • The SA qualification authorizes the carrying of either semi-automatic or non semi-automatic handguns.

Note: If you qualify with a revolver you cannot carry a semi-automatic on duty.

The Range Proficiency test requires firing 50 rounds at a B-27 human-shaped silhouette target (45” x 24”). A minimum score of 70% (175 out of 250 points) is required to pass. All shooting is conducted from the ready position (handgun in hand, aimed in). No holster draw or concealed carry shooting is allowed.

Scoring Details

  • Target Zones:
    • Inner scoring ring (~18” x 12”): 5 points
    • Middle scoring ring: 4 points
    • Outer scoring ring: 3 points
    • Shots outside the silhouette (green area): 0 points
  • Your instructor will guide you through each stage, including round counts and timing, so no memorization is needed.
  • Shooting distances is 3, 7, and 15 yards.
