License to Carry (LTC) Range Proficiency Course

At Train Protect Defend, our LTC Range Proficiency Course ensures you meet the Texas Department of Public Safety requirements for obtaining your License to Carry. This course focuses on safe and effective handgun handling, preparing you for the range qualification test with expert instruction.

Course Overview

The LTC Range Proficiency test requires firing 50 rounds at a B-27 human-shaped silhouette target (45” x 24”). A minimum score of 70% (175 out of 250 points) is required to pass. All shooting is conducted from the ready position (handgun in hand, aimed in). No holster draw or concealed carry shooting is allowed.

Scoring Details

  • Target Zones:
    • Inner scoring ring (~18” x 12”): 5 points
    • Middle scoring ring: 4 points
    • Outer scoring ring: 3 points
    • Shots outside the silhouette (green area): 0 points
  • Your instructor will guide you through each stage, including round counts and timing, so no memorization is needed.
  • Shooting distances is 3, 7, and 15 yards.

Equipment Requirements

  • Handgun: Semi-automatic or revolver, .22 caliber or higher.
  • Ammunition: Minimum of 50 rounds compatible with your firearm.
  • Optics: Red or green dot optics permitted (as of 2023). No magnification or lasers allowed.
  • Safety Gear: Hearing and eye protection (loaners available at no cost).
  • Loaner Firearms for private proficiencies only.
