What to Expect During Your Texas LTC Shooting Proficiency Test đŻđ«
If you’ve completed the Texas Online License to Carry (LTC) course, your next step is the required shooting proficiency test. This final phase proves that you can safely and accurately operate a handgunâand it’s a critical step in becoming a licensed and responsible gun owner.
At Train Protect Defend, we conduct LTC shooting proficiency sessions weekly at 407 Gun Club in Argyle, TXâvoted Best Gun Range in Denton County two years in a row. Here’s what to expect and how to prepare so you can complete your certification with confidence.
đ What Does âProficientâ Mean?
Being âproficientâ means that you already know how to safely:
- Load and unload your firearm
- Operate the controls on your handgun
- Clear malfunctions if they occur
- Maintain safe muzzle direction at all times
- Follow verbal range commands without assistance
If you are not yet proficient, this test is not the time to learn. You will be expected to demonstrate safe, confident gun handling from the moment you step onto the range.
đš If you are unsure about your current skill level, we strongly recommend scheduling a private lesson with us before taking the proficiency test. We’re here to help you succeed safely.
đ Firearm Safety Is Non-Negotiable
We take safety seriously. All participants are expected to follow the Four Fundamental Rules of Firearm Safety at all times:
- Treat every firearm as if it is loaded
- Never point the muzzle at anything youâre not willing to destroy
- Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on target
- Be sure of your target and whatâs beyond it
đ« Unsafe behavior or failure to follow instructions will result in immediate removal from the range.
Your safetyâand the safety of othersâis our top priority.

đ§ What Is the LTC Shooting Proficiency Test?
The LTC proficiency test is designed to demonstrate your ability to safely handle and shoot a handgun. This is not a class or shooting lessonâitâs a skills test. The shooting is conducted from a bench rest position, not from a holster or concealment.
Youâll be required to complete a series of timed shots at three distancesâ3, 7, and 15 yardsâusing a B-27 silhouette target.
