Can I Take Texas Level II Security Training 100% Online?
Yes. The Texas Department of Public Safety allows the Level II Non-Commissioned Security Officer training to be completed entirely online through a properly licensed training school.
What the online Level II course covers
The curriculum is set by DPS and typically includes:
- Roles, responsibilities, and limitations of security officers
- Legal aspects of private security work in Texas
- Observation skills and report writing
- Emergency response and safety procedures
- Professionalism, ethics, and communication
- Required written examination
Most approved online courses are self-paced. Many students finish the material and exam in a single day, though you can take longer if needed.
What happens after the online course
Passing the course gives you a Level II training certificate. You still need to:
- Submit electronic fingerprints through the approved vendor (usually IdentoGO)
- Complete the application in the Texas Online Private Security (TOPS) system
- Meet any additional checklist items DPS requires
- Affiliate with a licensed security company (or follow the independent process if applicable)
The certificate from an approved online provider is accepted the same as one issued from an in-person class. Employers care that the school is DPS-licensed, not whether the classroom portion was online or in person.
Important distinction
Level II can be fully online. Level III (armed) and Level IV (personal protection) have required in-person components for firearms proficiency, self-defense, and close-protection skills. You cannot complete those higher levels 100% online.
